Quick Answer: A wooden toy can pass every safety test and still arrive cracked, chipped, or broken because the packaging failed in transit. Drop testing checks whether the toy and its carton survive real shipping conditions. ESATOYS — the export brand of Wenzhou Times Arts & Crafts Co., Ltd. — has shipped wooden toys to EU and US buyers for 24 years. Here is what drop testing covers and what to confirm before your cartons leave China.

Two different drop tests, two different purposes
There are two tests buyers often confuse:
-
Toy drop test: Tests the toy itself. It checks whether parts detach, edges crack, or small pieces break loose after the toy is dropped.
-
Carton drop test: Tests the packaging. It checks whether the retail box and the products inside survive being dropped during handling and shipping.
Both matter, but they answer different questions. A toy can pass the toy drop test and still arrive damaged if the carton is too weak.
What the toy drop test requires
For the EU, EN71-1 specifies a drop height of 850 ± 50 mm, performed 5 times on the most onerous angle, for toys intended for children up to 14 years. For the US, ASTM F963 requires 10 drops from approximately 137 cm for toys intended for children 0–18 months, and 4 drops from approximately 91 cm for older age groups.-1
After the drops, the toy must not expose sharp edges, detachable small parts, or cracks that create a safety risk.
What the carton drop test requires
Carton testing usually follows ISTA protocols. For a carton weighing less than 10 kg, ISTA 1A specifies a drop height of about 76 cm, with drops on the most fragile corner, three edges, and six faces — 10 drops in total. For small parcel shipping, ISTA 3A uses a similar sequence with drop heights determined by weight.-11-21
A carton passes only if the outer box, the retail packaging, and the product inside all survive without damage, deformation, or functional failure.-21

Why wooden toys are vulnerable
Wood is rigid. When a carton is dropped, the impact energy has to go somewhere. Without proper cushioning, the energy travels straight into the toy. Thin edges crack. Painted corners chip. Glued joints separate.
The common root causes are:
-
Carton board grade too low for the product weight
-
Too little clearance between the toy and the box wall
-
No internal divider or cushioning
-
Retail box too thin to protect the product inside
A burst strength of around 200 PSI is often cited as a baseline for master cartons passing standard drop tests, but board grade alone is not enough — the internal structure matters just as much.-21
What to ask your supplier
Before production, confirm:
-
Will you perform a toy drop test per EN71-1 or ASTM F963 for the target age group?
-
Will you perform a carton drop test before shipment?
-
What carton board grade and burst strength do you use?
-
Is there internal cushioning, and is it tested with the actual product weight?
-
Can I see photos or video of the drop test?
A supplier who tests both the toy and the carton is protecting your brand, not just ticking a box.
