Quick Answer: Traceability is no longer just a quality control topic. For wooden toys entering the EU, new deforestation rules and retailer audits mean you may need to show where the wood came from, which batch was used, and which tests apply. ESATOYS — the export brand of Wenzhou Times Arts & Crafts Co., Ltd. — has produced wooden toys for EU and US buyers for 24 years. Here is what traceability looks like in practice, and what to request from your supplier.

Why traceability is moving from “nice to have” to “must have”
In the past, wooden toy buyers mainly tracked orders by invoice and shipment date. That is no longer enough. European retailers increasingly ask for batch-level records, and the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) adds a new layer for products that fall within its scope.
The core idea is simple: if a problem appears, you should be able to trace it back to the production batch, the wood source, and the test report tied to that batch. Without that link, a small quality issue can become a recall or a customs delay.
What EUDR means for wooden toys
Whether EUDR applies to a specific wooden toy depends on its customs classification, not just on the fact that it contains wood. EUDR covers products listed in Annex I by HS/CN code, and toys are not automatically included as a single category.
However, if your wooden toy falls under a covered CN code, or if the toy contains wood or pulp that falls within scope, compliance may be required. The application dates are 30 December 2026 for medium and large companies, and 30 June 2027 for micro and small enterprises. Some interpretations of the regulation treat wooden toys as within scope when their CN code is listed, while others note that toys as a finished product may fall outside Annex I. Because the scope is code-specific, the practical step is to confirm your exact CN code with your customs broker before assuming either position.
A Due Diligence Statement (DDS) is the document that shows a batch of wood-containing product was sourced, traced, and risk-assessed against deforestation rules before entering the EU market.

What batch-level traceability looks like
A practical traceability system connects four things:
-
The production batch: a batch number marked on the product or packaging, linking to the factory and production date
-
The wood input: supplier name, FSC certificate number if applicable, material type, and quantity
-
The test record: which safety tests were performed on that batch, and the results
-
The sales document: which buyer received which batch, and when
Some brands use a batch code printed next to the barcode or directly on the toy, so that each number corresponds to a production batch, the factory, the production date, and associated laboratory tests. For FSC-certified products, the Chain of Custody system requires purchase records, production and sales ledgers, and inventory records that include dates, supplier information, certificate numbers, material type, and quantities.
What to ask your supplier
Before you place a wooden toy order for the EU or US, ask:
-
Can you link each shipment to a specific production batch?
-
Can you provide batch-level test records for EN71, ASTM F963, or CPSIA?
-
If FSC-certified wood is used, can you show the FSC invoice and certificate number for that batch?
-
If EUDR applies to your CN code, can you provide the due diligence information and DDS reference?
-
How do you handle traceability if a batch mixes certified and non-certified wood?
A supplier who can answer these questions is already managing production at batch level. A supplier who only tracks by order number may struggle when a retailer or customs authority asks for more.
