Quick Answer: A wooden toy idea only becomes a real product when it is designed for production, safety, and retail. That means clear drawings, correct materials, sample approval, and compliance checks. ESATOYS — the export brand of Wenzhou Times Arts & Crafts Co., Ltd. — has developed custom wooden toys for EU and US buyers for 24 years. Here is how the design process works.

Why design decides everything
A wooden toy can look simple, but production is not simple. If the design does not consider wood grain, cutting, sanding, and assembly, problems appear later. A shape that looks good in a sketch may crack, feel rough, or be too expensive to produce.
Good design also decides safety. Edges, small parts, and age grading all start at the drawing stage. If you fix these early, you save time and money later.
Step 1: Define your market and age group
Before any drawing, confirm:
-
Target market: EU, US, or both
-
Age group: 0–3, 3–6, or 6+
-
Wood preference: beech, birch, bamboo, plywood, or FSC-certified
-
Logo method: laser engraving, printing, or sticker
-
Packaging: poly bag, color box, or retail carton
These choices affect testing, labels, and production. If you sell in both markets, tell your supplier early.
Step 2: Start with a sketch or reference
You do not need a perfect drawing. A sketch, photo, or even a rough idea is enough to start. We review it with the production team and give you feedback on shape, size, and materials.

Step 3: Prepare a technical drawing or 3D mock-up
This usually takes 3–5 working days. It shows dimensions, structure, and assembly. You approve the drawing before we make a sample. This step prevents misunderstandings and reduces sample revisions.
Step 4: Make a pre-production sample
Sampling usually takes 7–15 days after design confirmation. You check size, color, wood feel, engraving, and packaging. If something is not right, we adjust it. Only after you approve the sample do we move to mass production.
Step 5: Check safety and compliance
For the EU, you need EN71 and CE marking. For the US, you need ASTM F963 and CPSIA, including tracking labels. ESATOYS supports these requirements where applicable. We use non-toxic paints and adhesives, smooth edges, and controlled assembly. Third-party testing can be arranged before shipment.

Step 6: Prepare packaging and production
Once the sample is approved, we prepare packaging artwork, barcodes, warning labels, and export cartons. Production usually takes 30–45 days after sample approval and deposit. We do final QC before packing.
Common design mistakes

Skipping the technical drawing
-
Choosing a shape that is hard to produce
-
Forgetting age grading and small parts
